Working in a museum and occasionally collecting work for the national collection I realise just how difficult it is to collect a cohesive and such an important group of works and thanks from all of us need to go to Barrie Maskell for such an important collection. I know just how difficult it must have been to assemble this group of works: I have been chasing some of these artists myself for a number of years and haven't managed to get work half as good as some of these works you see here today.

Biography

Biography

Robert Hunter was born on 23 May 1920 in Liverpool and was awarded the Military Cross for distinguished service in the Second World War. He studied at Liverpool College of Art (1946-50) and at Southampton University before moving to Wales where he was appointed as a lecturer at the art department of Trinity College Carmarthen in 1952. He was to remain there until his retirement

The formation of the 56 Group and the coming together of like-minded artists acted as a spur to Robert Hunter. He was to remain a member of the Group until 1984 when he became an honorary member. His work was, at first, more abstract and then changed when he discovered the Celtic symbolism that would shape his style for the rest of his career.

Robert Hunter served on the Welsh Arts Council and was a judge for the National Eisteddfod of Wales. He took part in many group and solo exhibitions across Britain, the European continent and America. He died on 3 December 1996.

The works of Robert Hunter can be found in the following collections:-

Aberystwyth University; Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales, Cardiff; Contemporary Art Society for Wales; Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea; Keele University; Steel Company of Wales; Swansea University; other public and private collections in America, Great Britain and Holland.
